Apple earnings report: iPhone bumps up revenue but sales of iPad fall by 16%

apple-logo-smallThe latest earnings report from Apple has exceed expectations, with the company reporting an increase in revenue for the first three months of the year of $45.6 billion – way ahead of analysts’ predicted $43.5bn.

However, the report also reinforced the fact that Apple relies more than ever on the success of the iPhone for continuing growth.

The smartphone accounts for more than half of the company’s revenues and while sales of the device soared past expectations (43.7 million units sold compared to projections of 37.7m), this success was necessary to offset a slump in interest in the iPod, Macs and the iPad.

Apple again seeks decisive U.S. court ruling against Samsung

Apple-vs-SamsungApple and Samsung return to federal court on Tuesday for opening statements in their latest patent battle, with the iPhone maker expected to present more detailed evidence in its attempt to win a U.S. ban on sales of several Samsung smartphones.

Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have been litigating around the world for nearly three years. Jurors awarded the iPhone maker about $930 million after a 2012 trial in San Jose, California, but Apple failed to persuade U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to issue a permanent injunction against the sale of Samsung phones. Microsoft touts Office for iPad – BUT there’s a catch

microsoft-office-for-ipadMicrosoft has, after years of speculation, released some of its Office applications for Apple iPad owners – but you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to use them in anything other than their basic form.

The Apple App Store now has Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint available for download for iOS 7, and the apps have been reworked to fit in with the iPad’s layout and form factor.

The apps will allow people to view Office files on their tablet, but not create new documents or edit existing ones – for that you’ll need an Office 365 cloud subscription, starting at $70 a year. Continue reading

Apple’s CarPlay to roll in Luxury Autos

apple-carplayApple raced past Microsoft and Google for dashboard supremacy Monday with a premium roster of European automakers that agreed to use the company’s new in-car smartphone technology.

Luxury carmakers Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will be the first companies to introduce models equipped with CarPlay, which uses the iPhone’s Siri voice recognition technology to control music, maps, messaging and other features. Continue reading

Steve Jobs will appear on a US postage stamp in 2015

steve-jobs-appleMany of his creations reduced the need to send physical mail, but late Apple founder Steve Jobs will still get a fitting tribute from the US Postal Service: his likeness will appear on a postage stamp beginning in 2015, according to a document obtained by The Washington Post.

Other deceased icons receiving their own stamps that year include Elvis Presley and famed Tonight Show host Johnny Carson.

New Apple advert celebrates Macintosh’s 30th anniversary

apple-logo-smallApple have released a new video celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mac.

The company explains that the below clip was shot entirely with iPhones over the course of 1 day. 15 Camera crews were sent out across the world on January 24th with the task being to document “people doing amazing things with Apple products”. In the end, Apple had catered over 70 hours of footage.

This footage was sent back to Los Angeles to be edited and given a score. Jake Scott, sone of world famous director Ridley Scott (Alien) collaborated with his father to make this project.

Apple has said that some additional equipment was used to capture the images, with an expensive looking rig visible in one shot. Continue reading
