David Moyes sacked: Manager could be gone today – but Manchester United’s decision was made in February

Manchester_UnitedManchester United are expected to announce as early as Tuesday that they will be relieving David Moyes of his duties as manager, having concluded long before Sunday’s punishing defeat at Everton that he cannot be trusted with the potential £150m war chest intended to meet the club’s aim of reclaiming the Premier League title next season.

The Glazer family, who will be in Manchester next week to help oversee a managerial recruitment process in which Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp is a front-runner, appear to have sanctioned the removal of Moyes as far back as the Champions League defeat at Olympiakos on 25 February.

The decision to get rid of the 50-year-old was discussed and possibly ratified at a recent United board meeting but there is a financial motive behind delaying removing him until now. Continue reading

Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp ‘making plans’

Oscar-Pistorius-Fall-From-GraceSouth African athlete Oscar Pistorius has said he and his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp shared many things in common, on the second day of his testimony at his murder trial.

He said they had been talking about “future plans” together.

He denies deliberately shooting dead Ms Steenkamp in his home on Valentine’s Day last year, arguing he mistook her for an intruder.

Dons fans have embraced Don’t You Want Me – a number one in 1981 – by changing the lyrics to “Peter Pawlett Baby”.

Campaigns on Facebook and Twitter to get the song to the top of the charts have snowballed since the club won the Scottish League Cup on Sunday – with the song echoing in the background Continue reading

May start for city bike-hire scheme

city bike-hireAround 400 bikes will be placed at 31 permanent locations and at a further six areas which will only operate during the Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow City Council has agreed to spend almost £600,000 to fund the scheme for the next three years.

It will be run along similar lines to the Boris Bikes scheme which operates across large parts of London. Continue reading
