The total raised by terminally-ill teenager Stephen Sutton has now passed the £3 million mark.
The sick 19-year-old has now raised more than three times his initial target for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
News of the new fundraising landmark came as the teenager revealed he has been able to leave his sickbed for the first time in a week.
Updating his followers on Twitter, Stephen tweeted: ‘First time I’ve moved out of this room in a week. I’ve only been in a wheelchair to the end of the ward and back, but it feels so, so, so good.’ Continue reading
A huge research ship costing £200 million has been commissioned, which will probe the oceans and climate of the arctic and Antarctic, George Osborne will announce today.
The new vessel, to be operated by the British Antarctic Survey, will replace the UK’s two current polar exploration ships, which are nearing the end of their lives.
Although primarily for research, the government said the ship would also allow Britain to “maintain our presence” around the British territories in the South Atlantic.

Massive variations in broadband speeds across Britain mean the time taken to download a film can take up to 15 hours in some areas and just nine minutes in others, a report has revealed.
Slow broadband is still largely the scourge of the British countryside, but data from independent comparison website uSwitch.com shows even some urban parts of the UK are suffering from slow connection speeds, despite being just a short distance from areas with much higher speeds.
Overall, the report claims that 40 per cent of all Britons experience speeds of under 5Mbps, at which it takes 13 minutes to download just one episode of a TV show. Continue reading
Kim Taylor, 54, said that flames tore through the rear seat of her vehicle and the windows were left covered in soot.
No-one was injured as the car was parked and unoccupied at the time.
But Ms Taylor, of Aylestone, Leicester, said that the incident could have been worse if it had taken place in her house or while on a car journey.

A terminally ill 19-year-old’s online fundraising page has gone viral, helping him raise nearly £1m for a cancer charity.
Stephen Sutton, from Burntwood in Staffordshire, was diagnosed with incurable colorectal cancer at the age of 15.
Last year he was told it was inoperable, prompting him to write a bucket list of 46 things he wanted to achieve.

A black and white portrait of the Queen has been released by David Bailey to celebrate her 88th birthday today.
The photograph was taken at Buckingham Palace in March and commissioned on behalf of the Government’s GREAT Britain campaign.
The image of Queen Elizabeth II smiling will be used in activity to support the campaign, which aims to highlight Britain as a world-class destination for trade, tourism, investment and education.
