HTC first announced the mid-range Desire 500 back in August, but t has only just been released on UK shores this week. The handset is now available from Carphone Warehouse and will cost £180 when purchased with £10 pay-as-you-go credit. Alternatively, you can pick up the handset for free on a £15 a month contract.
As the price suggests, this is a mid-range phone. Despite that, it has some really quite reasonable specifications. It has a 4.3” screen with 480 x 800 resolution display and it is packing a 1.2GHz quad core processor as well as 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is 4GB but this can be expanded to 64GB thanks to the microSD card slot that is on board too.
There is an 8mp rear facing camera, although this isn’t ultrapixel like a lot of the higher end HTC phones now include, and there’s also a 1.6mp front facing camera for video calling and self-portrait photos.
In terms of features, it, of course, includes the brilliant BlinkFeed, which combines social updates and news headlines in a single, convenient home screen. Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean has the intuitive Sense overlay from HTC that ensures everything is easy to use, and also ensures that you can install good quality apps and games from Google Play.
There are other features to help persuade you to part with your money too. There’s a rapid fire shutter that enables burst photography and, once you’ve taken the photos, you can automatically combine them, add some music, and create a 30 second clip of an event.
HTC continue to manufacture good quality phones, and they stand out when it comes to budget and mid-range phones especially. The Desire 500 is no exception and well worth the £180 sim free cost.
