The man, originally from El Salvador, had been working in Mexico as a fisherman for 15 years was sailing to El Salvador when his boat encountered trouble.
He survived only by catching fish, turtles and birds. Having to resort to drinking turtle blood when there was no rain. His partner on the boat, a young man aged between 15 and 18 died after four weeks aboard the 24ft fiberglass vessel.
Now he is safe, he wishes to see his family and return to Mexico, who he fears may have believed he had died after so long without contact.
‘Luck’ had brought him close to the Marshall Islands where two fisherman spotted his help signals and rescued him.
