Samsung has unveiled its smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, at this year’s consumer electronics show IFA 2013. EE and Phones 4 U have said that they will offer a £100 discount on pre-orders of the wearable technology.
The Sony smartwatch has attracted numerous rumours and leaks in the past few months but the technology giant has finally confirmed the device while unveiling it at this year’s IFA 2013 consumer electronics show. It is effectively going to take on fitness tracking wrist wear like the FuelBand, but it will also include features like a touch screen, twin microphones, and video recording functionality.
At the Samsung Unpacked event, company executives launched the phone which will pair with Galaxy smartphones and other devices to offer call and messaging functionality. The Galaxy Gear will act as a remote control for Galaxy smartphones so that users can control their music and video collection.
A number of features that look to take advantage of the pairing of two devices include the Auto Lock function. When the user’s smartphone is more than 1.5m away from the Gear, the phone will automatically lock in order to act as a deterred to thieves and to prevent people from being able to use the phone for calling and messaging if it is stolen.
The watch is definitely going to prove more popular with active users, with a variety of features that will see the device go up against the likes of the Fuel Band from Nike. It has an accelerometer and pedometer, both of which allow for the tracking of distance travelled, calories burned, and speed.
The Gear has a 1.63” AMOLED touch screen display and is targeted at those that already own a phone like the Samsung Galaxy S4.
The Galaxy Gear is set for release on September 25th and not only will it go up against the Nike Fuel Band but the Sony SmartWatch 2 and possibly the Apple iWatch.
Both EE and Phones4U have confirmed that they will be stocking the Gear and that they will be taking pre-orders. What’s more, although neither firm has yet announced the price of the device, Phones4U has said that customers who pre-order the smartwatch will be given the chance to opt-in and receive a £100 discount on the release price.
EE has said that they will also be stocking the phone but they have also remained quiet on a price. Other operators have to yet to commit, or otherwise, to whether they will be carrying and offering the watch.
