Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has overtaken the Nintendo Wii to become the best selling console of this generation. Dismay from gamers means that they may not be so successful in the next gen battle.
GfK Chart Track has said that the Xbox 360 is about to knock the Nintendo Wii from its perch as the biggest selling console of this generation; a major feat when you consider how popular the Nintendo system has proven with gamers and people of all ages. It helped to bring consoles from the bedroom into the living room and as well as kids and parents, it saw grandparents and the older generation taking to gaming in a big way. However, the hardcore and more serious gamers have seemingly responded.
According to figures, the Xbox 360 has sold just short of 8.5m units and it’s a matter of days before it will overtake the Wii. However, it still has some way to go before it surpasses the current record, which is held by Sony’s Playstation 2.
The Playstation 2 was only discontinued in January of this year having initially launched in 2000. 10 million Playstation 2 consoles were sold in this time but with at least a couple more years of sales left for the Xbox 360 it seems likely that it will take the record.
However, things do not look as rosy for the next generation of Microsoft console. The Xbox One has been plagued by bad press as the company announced a price that is £70 above that of its rival and also angered gamers with the early announcement that it would not allow second hand games to be played. Microsoft has since backtracked on the latter point so that gamers will be able to lend, borrow, and part exchange physical games and be able to play them on the new system.
